Founding Families of New York: Preserving Heritage, Honoring Legacy
Our Mission
Founding Families of New York is committed to preserving the rich history and lasting legacy of the founding families of North Rockland, New York City, and New York State. Many of these families, including the Waldron, Van Wyck, Van Cortlandt, Ten Eyck, Knapp, De La Montagne and Phillips families, not only played pivotal roles in the development of the region but also have deep ancestral roots tied to European royal dynasties.
On this website we will feature a comprehensive listing of these ancestors, along with supporting records. In addition, we are dedicated to pursuing historical landmark status for key sites across the state that have yet to be recognized, ensuring the legacy of these families continues to be honored.
Community Involvement
Guided by the motto, “Service to others above thyself,” the Association is actively involved in various community and civic initiatives. One such project is the potential revival of the Waldron family theater in Haverstraw, which was tragically destroyed by fire. The restoration will provide a venue for local youth to engage in the arts and for the community to enjoy cultural performances.
Moreover, we are in the process of planning a family museum, which will showcase the instrumental roles our families played in shaping Stony Point, Haverstraw, and surrounding areas. The museum will serve as a tribute to both historical figures and their modern-day descendants.
Historical Landmarks Initiative
In keeping with our mission, we are actively working to secure historical landmark designations for important buildings and areas across New York State that have not yet been recognized, but which hold deep significance for our founding families. Sites such as the Van Cortlandt estate, the Ten Eyck family properties, and several civic landmarks established by the Waldron family are key examples of places we hope to preserve for future generations.
By pursuing these designations, we aim to ensure that these historic locations, connected to our families’ contributions to law enforcement, commerce, and governance, are formally recognized and celebrated.
